Training for a healthy life

What if I do not finish the challenge that I have put before me? I have been training as best as I can without compromising my relationships, work and down time. I miss at least a workout a week and still have not discovered the LOVE of running.

Maybe if I change my goal; I’m going to attempt the challenge half, but I am training to be a healthier 40 year old. I have been making lifestyle choices to bring me closer to this goal, and when I turn 40, I can look back and see that I have been doing my best to honour the body that I have been given.

Nostalgia

Have you ever listens to music and start to think about how you heard in the fist place? Especially if if is obscure… ? Sigur Ros, introduced 10 years ago by a short term friend- turned long distance acquaintance and listening to it now 10 years later brings back fondness of what my 20’s. how much has changed? I drink less, sleep more, I have more questions about my future than answers ( 20 year olds have all the answers) however I feel that I am learning more about myself now than ever before.

Learning to lean into the dip (pre race report)

Training is hard, and on race day the success my training will shine through with a result of a hard day, I have been a bit lazy the passed few weeks workouts, and I know it will effect my overall day.

However I am not in it for just this day, I’m in it for the rest of my life. Triathlon is part of the bigger picture of health. As I continue to make a commitment to be a healthy adult (body and mind) I know that I will be hit with a dip. That part of the journey were there is a wall in front of me that if I want to be a super star I have to work through it, if that is what I want.

At 5:23 am on Sunday morning as I get ready for race number 2 of this journey I know that I will have fun, and I think that is all that matters!

Falling off the wagon and fighting to get back on; Sun Run Race report

The day stared early at 6:30, a hearty breakfast of yogurt, cottage cheese, plums and hemp seeds, with a half bagel and coffee. The weather is overcast with a chance of rain.

We got to the start line in time to wait around for another hour‚Ķ next year I plan on showing up an hour late ūüôā The run started with a slow moving mass at the start line, and I stuck to my plan of 10 minutes running (slowly) and 1 minute walk. ¬†I found my stride once the crowd thinned out a bit and stuck to it.

I hour and 26 minutes later I heard Steve King at the finish line, I could imagine what it will be like when I cross the Challenge line in 3 months.  I bet I will shed a small tear when I do!

Completing the Sun Run was a good kick off to the outdoor season for me, I have been overworked in the past few weeks and my training has suffered for it.  I find it hard to balance the work life training game.

When I get home and I am  tired and it is raining or I just want to do nothing and the idea of suiting up for a run seems impossible how do I find the power to overcome the need to do nothing?  How people can do this with a family and a job is beyond me…

 

The end of spin:( Start of the outdoor season!

The indoor season has ended, and I have to thank Coach Rob (in the back) Jocelynn, D (taking the picture) and of coarse Speed Theory on 4th for the spin classes, indoor spin is a great way to get out the door on a cold winters morning and get the workout done. I am remained that community is an important part of the process.
When you train on your own, it is easy to let the self talk get you down. When you are surround with like minded people you feel the support/ competition/ need to feel like I can do it!

The next big step was signing up for a second race, a pre Challenge to get one tri under my belt, to have an understanding about the transitions and the race demands, The Victoria sprint in June has been booked… feeling a bit overwhelmed!

Also a shout out to Q energy for keeping me Awesome!

How to add a bit of yoga to my day

So I am not a huge fan of Yoga. I think it is because I need to do yoga, my mind is unable to calm down enough for the whole hour, and to be painfully honest I think being surrounded by all the supper slim and fit women and men makes me feel a little self consious!

So I found 5 yoga move that you should do every morning, I just did day one and so far so good! The moves are:
Back bend with side stretch
Forward fold
Tree pose
Cat -cow

The whole thing took 10 min, and now I feel ready to go swimming at 6:30 m!

So, the bike should be comfortable?!?!?

I had my first bike fit of the year, today, at Speed Theory in Kits. This will be part one, as it was recommended to get another one in April which will take my road bike to more of a Triathlon position with Aero Bars…

I have had a few bike fits over the years; adjusting the seat, stem, and handle bars and such. But I have never had such thorough fit before!

My main complaints were:

  1. Numbing in my toes after about an hour of riding
  2. Lack of power when I stand and pedal
  3. Occasional right knee pain
  4. Hot spots when riding long distances

After the bike fit I searched Google for “foot-tilt” and found this:

Research conducted on cyclist’s feet showed that 96% of us have forefeet that are canted or tilted up to the inside inward (“varus“) or outward toward the outside (“valgus“).¬† The vast majority (87%) of cyclist’s feet tilt up to the inside.¬†¬†Unfortunately, almost all cycling shoes, cleats and pedals take this natural tilt and force it flat.¬† This can generate knee pain, create a foot “hotspot” (where the inner or outer side of the foot feels hot) and diminish your ability to generate power’.

My left foot is 3% my right foot is 12%. The bike fitter, Tom, said that such a tilt would explain my knee pain, toe numbness and possibly other weakness. After many bike fits over the years I am amazed this is the first time I have heard of it.

Tom also tweaked many other positions on the bike, dropped the seat post, push back the saddle, adjusted the hoods, cleats, and the left peddle.  I look forward to out door riding so I can really test this out!

How to lose yourself at the pool

I don’t know how, but I’ve managed to get lost in two pools so far this month. ¬†I’ve become an expert at this topic, so I will share some of my tips with you. ¬†Here’s how to get lost in a small public building:

  1. Don’t pay attention to any signs
  2. Get changed in a bathroom that looks like every other room in the building
  3. Remove your glasses and lock them in your locker
  4. Stumble out of weird locker room to meet your swimming buddies
  5. Swim till you are ready to puke from exhaustion and inhaling too much water

Tonight was my first time swimming at the Vancouver Aquatic Centre, and everything seemed to go well until the end.  After my workout, I wander back to the ladies room and look around.  Nothing looks the same.  I backtrack to ensure I took the same entry, and squint at every sign on my way back in. I wander around for what feels like forever, until I see someone. I squint and ask for help… seeing the fear in my blind eyes, she led me to the appropriate door.  Thanks for the kindness of strangers in the local pool!

If I’m having this much trouble finding my way at the pool, I don’t know how I’m ever going to find my bike in the transition area at Challenge!

Coach Rob!

I have officially received my first week of Training on Training Peaks. CR e-mailed me to warm me that it might look light, as he would like to get be on a build, recover and build some more… this week starting three days ago (Tuesday) to Sunday I have 5 hours of training to get in!

If this is light… I might need an extra few days a week. Anyone have an extra spare?

Does this mean I am a triathlete?

Saturday morning 6am… so tired! I am drinking my Greens Plus with caffeine to get my day started. We are off to a 90 minute spin class at Speed Theory.

Yesterday started at 5am with a speed work running 3.25 km. It felt great being out in the dark with the stars above. After a day of work we headed to the pool for laps. My first since the last summer.

I am worried… I made it one length 50 meters and thought how many do I have to do in August?

The answer: the equivalent of 38 lengths of 50 meter pool! (1.9km)

So tired!!!
